A 17-year-old girl was taken to hospital after breaking onto the tracks at Ashtead station last night.

Thousands of commuters suffered delays of up to one hour during rush hour after the British Transport Police and Surrey Police were called to the scene at about 5.35pm on October 18 after reports of a woman trespassing on the tracks.

Over 100 trains were disrupted with five services cancelled, four trains terminating early and 97 delayed.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "Police were called and trains through the area were moving with extreme caution.

"The level crossing barriers were held in the down position for a while.

"We had to switch the electrics of to allow the emergency services on the line."

The woman, who was clear of the tracks by 6.20pm and may have been suicidal, was not injured but was taken to Epsom Hospital where she is currently being assessed.

The track was reopened at 6.45pm and normal working operations resumed at 7.40pm.
