Croydon offer three options for future of Upper Norwood Joint Library

The future of the Upper Norwood Joint Library is still unclear as a spat between Croydon and Lambeth councils continues.

In the latest development since Croydon pulled out of its joint agreement with Lambeth, it has offered three options for the future of the library.

Croydon claim two options ensure the safekeeping of the library, but none involve another joint partnership.

Croydon’s chief executive, Jon Rouse, has also given “detailed responses to points raised” by Lambeth after the notice of termination.

Councillor Sara Bashford, Croydon Council’s cabinet member for customer services, culture and sport, said: “We look forward to receiving a response from Lambeth and to making progress on this issue after two years of frustration.”

Croydon pulled out of the unique joint library agreement last month claiming Lambeth had failed to cooperate at both its 2010 and 2011 annual general meeting.

But Lambeth Council have accused Croydon of breaking the agreement by installing cabinet members on to the committee instead of local ward councillors.

Their members boycotted the 2011 AGM over the decision, which prompted the row and led to Croydon terminating the agreement.
