Strikes are set to bring hundreds of public sector workers on to picket lines across Merton tomorrow.

Dozens of unions have voted for strike action in a dispute with the Government about changes to pensions. Unions taking action include Unite, Unison, the GMB and several representing teachers - as many as 2 million of their members could walk out tomorrow.

Merton Council said most of the borough's household waste and recycling was likely to be picked up 24 hours late as a result of the walkouts.

The strikes are set to hit offices of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in Wimbledon, and close classrooms at dozens of schools and colleges.

Epsom and St Helier Hospital Trust has already announced plans to cancel some non-emergency operations because of expected staff shortages.
