Pupils across Kingston are staying at home today as their teachers strike, but not everyone supports the move.

Coombe Girls School in New Malden was empty this morning, one of 24 primary and secondary schools confirmed as closed for the day.

One reader emailed to say: "Kingston College is closed today.

"There's not enough teachers to keep it open due to health + safety regulations.

"I'm still going to catch up with work at home, regardless. Its just one day, not too bad. Last year the snow was more disruptive and that was closer to exam time so..."

But one doctor said: "The strike has closed Burlington junior school. "How would teachers, alleged professionals, react if doctors were on strike?" Traffic on the roads is reported to be less than usual as thousands of school runs have been cancelled.

At Kingston Hospital, former Government minister John Healey is expected to arrive at 10am to address strikers.

PCSOs have also been spotted on bikes in Kingston, hinting that they have turned up for work.
