A charity formed to support elderly in the borough has been saved by Age UK Croydon, which hopes to use its facilities to promote healthy living.

Thornton Heath Darby & Joan Club established in 1951, has joined with the nation-wide charity after dwindling volunteer numbers threatened to see the organisation close down.

Terry Roberts, chairman of Age UK Croydon said the charity was delighted to help.

He said: “Darby & Joan at one time had hundreds of members but over time have had trouble with the running of it and last year the board of directors approached us with a view to merging.

It is my belief that two charities combined can do greater good for the elderly of the borough.”

Run out of a large assembly hall on Brigstock Road, the Darby & Joan Club organizes social events such as bingo evenings, day trips and line dancing for residents in the area.

Mr Roberts added: "The commitment we have given in the short term is to continue the activities they have before. We hope we will be able to develop a wider range of activities focusing on health.

"The building is in a fantastic location and we hope it can become a centre for our health programme opening up to the wider Croydon community."

Iris West, Director of Thornton Heath Darby & Joan Club, said: “I am delighted with the merger with Age UK Croydon. "We hope to be able to provide a wider range of services and opportunities for our members both now and in the future.”

A meeting with existing Darby & Joan members will be held in January to consult on the merger and ask for ideas on how to improve the service.
