This weekend sees an extra five trains added to the District Line from Wimbledon to central London during rush hour.

London Underground (LU) said the new trains would start running on Sunday and would serve 4,000 more passengers during the morning peak.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "Hundreds of thousands of passengers will benefit from this practical and pragmatic change to markedly improve the most congested part of the tube network."

The decision came after a consultation about changes to the heavily congested service, which also calls at Wimbledon Park and Southfields stations.

To pave the way for the change, LU has scrapped the weekday shuttle service between Kensington Olympia and High Street Kensington.

LU said the “poorly used” Olympia service was creating bottlenecks for 20 per cent of trains pulling in to Earl’s Court Station and had created delays for 150,000 customers.

London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth, Richard Tracey, said: "This is really very welcome news for commuters from Putney, Southfields, and Wimbledon.

"I am delighted. We lobbied very hard to get these improvements and they have been delivered by Boris and TfL."
