Dozens of emergency service personnel were deployed to Wimbledon town centre at lunchtime after a car crashed into a central reservation.

The accident, at the junction of Wimbledon Hill Road and Worple Road, happened at about 1.45pm when the driver of a Vauxhall car ploughed into a bollard when trying to turn right.

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said the female driver had escaped uninjured before paramedics and crews from Wimbledon fire station arrived on the scene.

David Smith, who saw firefighters dealing with the incident, said: "A load of us were just watching the firefighters using these air-bag things to lift the car out.

"The driver is a woman who I was told was in her 40s. I feel sorry for her because her tyre is blown and she's probably wrecked her suspension."

London Ambulance service confirmed that a woman was taken to Kingston Hospital as a precaution.
