The Prime Minister, David Cameron's 'big idea', the Big Society, seeks to get us all more involved in our local communities so that power can be devolved downwards from central and local government and we can all play a fuller role in how our society works.

Taking on more responsibility in the local community is what he wants us to do.

There is a good example of this already happening locally - indeed, its been going on since 1871 when the Wimbledon & Putney Commons Act resulted in the take-over of Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common from the Lord of the Manor, Lord Spencer, by the creation of the Commons Conservators.

The Conservators' Board, made up of eight local residents, are the trustees of these special open spaces and manage them for the benefit of the local community.

They raise the Commons Levy from local residents to help to pay for the Commons' maintenance.

Five of the Conservators are elected by the Levy payers and three are appointed by the government. There is to be a Conservators' election in February - so we can all, as Levy payers, play our part, then, in this community- based enterprise.

Perhaps the 'Big Society' isn't such a new idea after all!
