A burglar who told jurors he played no part in the summer riots after being caught leaving an electrical shop with a gang of looters has been jailed.

Robert Campbell, 38, was one of 30 people to be arrested outside Curry’s in Effra Road on the night of August 8 last year.

Campbell, of Rutford Road, Streatham, denied throughout his trial that he had entered the store, despite being seen leaving it by several police officers.

On Tuesday (January 24) at the the Inner London Crown Court, he was sentenced to three years in prison.

In a separate trial, a young mother who stashed £2,500 worth of electrical items from the same store was also put behind bars.

Regina Appiah told police she did not know how four televisions, a camcorder, a webcam and an electric drill had come to be in her home on the Clapham Park Estate, despite being the only person to have a set of keys for her flat.

But the 25-year-old care assistant, who has a two-year-old child, was found guilty of handling stolen goods at the Inner London Crown Court and handed a 16 month sentence on January 19.

Detective Inspector Denton, who is part of the Metropolitan Police’s investigation into the riots, said: “These convictions are the result of solid hard work by my team. The disorder may have happened five months ago but we continue our work to make Lambeth stronger and safer.”
