The Nine Elms regeneration project is gathering momentum after a large-scale planning applications was given the green light.

A plan to build 450 homes at Marco Polo House, in Queenstown Road, was granted approval by councillors at planning meeting on Thursday.

This was followed by the submission of an application to develop another 400 homes at Market Towers office in Nine Elms - called One Nine Elms.

The application, a joint venture by CIT and Green Properties, is now being assessed by the council’s planning department. Once validated, a public consultation will be launched.

Both of these developments will also house a significant amount of commercial space including shop, cafes and restaurants.

Wandsworth Council’s planning chairman, Councillor Nick Cuff, said: “Nine Elms has begun to transform on an enormous scale. Building work is already underway on several major schemes and more planning applications will soon be coming forward."

Work has started on St George's Vauxhall Tower scheme and St James Group's Riverlight development.

Works have also begun on the site of the new US Embassy which is expected to open in 2017.

The area includes Battersea Power Station, which has planning permission for more than 4,000 new homes and a new town centre development, although a new developer is being sought after the last one went into administration in December.
