The freezing weather caused a water main to burst this morning which resulted in a cyclist falling off his bike.

Firefighters were called at 7.30am to fix the water main in Wymond Street, Putney.

Thames Water were informed and the main is currently being fixed.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We are noticing more of this because of the colder winter weather.

"It is a problem at the moment because the water turns to ice and cyclists and motorcyclists fall on it."

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: "A leak on Wymond Street was reported to us this morning. We have gritted the area and will fix the pipe today.

"We have experienced an increase in burst water pipes over the past few days as a result of the cold weather. When temperatures drop, our pipes - especially the old cast-iron ones - contract and in some cases they break along hairline weaknesses.

"We are doing everything we can to fix these pipes as soon as we can."
