Tooting Library was one of eight winners at the 2011 Wandsworth Design Awards.

The award-winners were announced after judges scoured the borough for the best building projects of the past two years.

Tooting Library, one of the borough's most recognisable buildings, stood out after completing a successful extension project and a refurbishment of its library facilities.

Other winners included Balham's Broomwood Hall School, where additional floor space in the roof of the Grade II listed building was created following building work, and Our Lady of Pity and St Simon Stock RC Church, in Putney, which won an Access Award after work was done to create better access for people with disabilities.

The council's Design Award Scheme - the seventh time it has been run since its inception in April 1999 - aims to give public recognition to recent local building projects which make a positive contribution to the environment and set a good example for other developments.

Nominations were invited from local amenity groups, businesses, architects, residents and people working in the borough who wanted to acknowledge schemes of high quality design and projects that improved access for people with disabilities.

A shortlist was judged by a panel made up of councillors, local architects and representatives from the Wandsworth Access Association and local amenity societies.

Along with the eight outright winners, nine schemes were awarded commendations.

Wandsworth's mayor, Councillor Jane Cooper, and the borough's planning committee chairman, Councillor Nick Cuff, will present certificates to those people involved with the winning projects at a special ceremony at Broomwood Hall School, in Nightingale Lane, on February 28.
