Baby twins can sleep side by side at St Peter’s neonatal intensive care unit thanks to fundraisers.

The Chertsey hospital has bought a Kanmed twin babywarmer cot, which enables two babies to keep warm next to each other via a special temperature-controlled water mattress.

Identical twins Rocco and Reo Andrew have been in the unit for more than seven weeks and spent two of those in the shared cot.

Mum Jaymie Andrew, from Twickenham, said: “The boys were born on January 5 and when they first came in to the unit they were too small and sick to be able to share a cot so went into separate incubators.

“I tried double cuddles with both boys but they didn’t really interact with each other like they do now.

“When they first went into the joint cot they tended to stay on separate sides and face away from each other – like they were wondering who the other was invading their space.

“But they gradually moved closer and closer together and now cuddle up together when they are sleeping and often face each other.

“After a tough few weeks it melts my heart to see them like that.”

The money used to fund the cot was raised at an event last May called Pushing for NICU, organised by staff and families on the unit.
