Plans have been unveiled for a controversial new late night bar.

Ademuyiwa Adeleke has submitted an application to open a new late night bar and restaurant for the "alternative music crowd" in Grove Road, Sutton, on the site of former pub The Academy, which was closed in 2007.

But the proposals, which include a licence to serve alcohol until 4.30am, seven days a week, have caused concern among people living nearby.

The club is close to high-rise residential blocks in Sutton Park Road, and is opposite the Greensleeves Manor housing development.

A petition has been launched objecting to the plans.

Paul Roberts, manager at Stuart Crump Pharmacy, next door to the venue, said: "Although we are close to the High Street this is in fact a fairly residential area. Many people will be against it.

"Someone has already come in asking me to sign a petition against it."

"Its being proposed as a bar and restaurant, but its clearly going to be a nightclub."

Mr Adekele's plans for the bar include live music, comedy nights, cinema screenings, and alternative music nights including dub-step and indie, and a possible heavy metal night.

If his application is accepted by Sutton Council, it would see the bar open as early as April, with opening hours of 9am to 5am.

The bar would look to charge for late night entry.

Mr Adekele said: "We want it to be an alternative venue which is totally different from anything else in Sutton. It will be for the alternative crowd, who are non-violent and like their music.

"He said I'm not trying to create a disco, this will be somewhere people can come and relax with friends."

He said he understood residents might have concerns about noise, but he said the bar was "conscious of its neighbours", with no glass being taken outside between 7pm and 7am, and a smoking section being at the front of the venue, away from the large residential tower blocks behind it.

Anyone with an opinion on the application must give it to Sutton Council by March 10.
