A 35-year-old killed this morning in Mitcham after his car was involved in a crash with a refrigerated lorry was from Carshalton.

The incident happened at 8.13am in London Road, Mitcham, opposite the junction with Crescent Grove.

A silver Peugeot car was in collision with a white refrigerated lorry.

The driver of the Peugeot, a 35 year old man from Carshalton, was treated by the London Ambulance Service, but died at the scene.

Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased but await formal identification and all next of kin to be made aware.

The driver of the lorry stopped. There have been no arrests.

DS Kath Chisholm, who is leading the investigation, said "I am grateful to a number of people who stopped at the scene. This stretch of road was busy at the time and I would urge anyone who may have seen the collision or the moments leading up to it to contact police".

A post-mortem will be conducted in due course.

The Coroner has been informed and an inquest will be opened and adjourned in due course.
