British Transport Police have charged a man with arson following a public appeal.
Officers appealed for information after a man set fire to a pile of newspapers on a train between Crystal Palace and Norwood Junction on February 2.
The carriage filled with smoke and the train had to be taken out of service.
Last week Martin Booker of Selhurst New Road, South Norwood, was charged with arson with intent to recklessly endanger life.
The 23-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on February 25.
He was remanded in custody and will appear at Blackfriars Crown Court on March 7.
