A licensing application for a Sainsbury's to sell booze 24 hours has been withdrawn, to the relief of people living nearby.

The store, in Clapham Junction Station, applied to the council for a license to allow it to sell alcohol 24 hours a day earlier this month, but has since withdrawn it.

Northcote Ward councillors concerned it would increase crime in the area had asked residents to post their concerns to the council.

Councillor Peter Dawson said: "Sainsbury’s decision to withdraw their application is welcome news.

"Clapham Junction does not need a shop selling alcohol 24 hours a day and people living in Northcote ward were rightly concerned about the possible consequences in the local area. Fortunately common sense has prevailed."
