Two "dangerous and reckless" motorists have been jailed for a total of 10 years after a road rage row led to the death of a 79-year-old woman.

Marcus Bailey, 31, of Union Grove, Battersea, and Jaswant Bains, 32, from Plumstead, got into an argument following a minor "prang" where Bains clipped Bailey's wing-mirror.

The two men jumped out of their respective cars and shouted at each other before Bains sped off with Bailey in pursuit.

The pair chased each other for about a mile before Bains' Vauxhall Corsa ploughed straight into a large traffic island where pedestrian Audrey Walker was standing.

The car, driven by Bains, hit Miss Audrey, who also lived in Plumstead, head-on and killed her instantly.

Just moments after the crash, Bailey pulled up in his Vauxhall Astra and, realising what had happened, ran off and tried to hide in a nearby estate agents.

Both men were arrested at the scene of the crash which happened on September 23, 2010, in Stratheden Road, Blackheath.

Bailey was found guilty of causing death by careless driving, jailed for two years and disqualified from driving for three years.

Bains was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, jailed for eight years and banned from driving for six years.

The two men were sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, March 23.

Detective Inspector Mark Cam, who led the polcie investigation, said: "Miss Walker lost her life because of Bains and Bailey's reckless behaviour, which started from a minor dispute on a public road.

"They both drove dangerously, recklessly, above the speed limit and without any consideration for members of the public.

"This wasn't simply a case of bad driving, there is no excuse for either man's behaviour - I am pleased with today's verdict.

"I hope it goes some small way to providing comfort to Miss Walker's family who have acted with great dignity throughout this investigation."
