Hundreds of schoolchildren, parents, householders and shop workers ran, hopped, skipped and scooted across the borough to raise money for Sport Relief.

Events were held across Kingston for the annual charity fundraiser, which sees the nation raise money through sporting challenges for people living in the UK and abroad.

Pupils at Fern Hill Primary School, in Richmond Road, ran 260 miles collectively to raise more than £700, with collections still rolling in.

Nerana Ramlakham, parent and member of the school’s fundraising group, said: "It was absolutely amazing, the whole day was incredible. Over 500 children ran and did the equivalent of ten marathons.

"Sport Relief provided medals so they all came through the finishing line and got those."

Staff at Sainsburys in Sury Basin took part in an in-store sponsored walk, covering the 300-mile distance from the store to a Cornwall branch.

The shop workers followed a sign posted route round the supermarket to complete the 600 lap race, which was given a competitive edge by inter-department challenges using skipping ropes, hula hoops and space hoppers.

Children at Alexandra Infant School were cheered on by staff and parents as they raced around Dinton Fields with music playing aiming to raise £1000 for the cause.
