The front page story 'Boy in limbo after illegal school exclusion'highlights the problem we have in Merton, and indeed south-west London more generally with regards to educational provision for young people with average or high intelligence but whose special educational needs make it difficult for them to fit into mainstream schooling.
For the sake of these young people’s health and to ensure the best possible outcomes for adult life, there urgently needs to be a push for all agencies to work together and ensure that the needs of these children are no longer neglected or dealt with inappropriately.
Tax payers should be asking their MPs and councillors why so much of their money is being spent on residential provision outside London, day schools beyond the M25, private schools and special educational needs transport.
Inadequate provision also has repercussions for the costs of adult services as these children are ill prepared for life, either academically or socially, and then find it hard to work or live independently in their home borough.
