A man hailed a hero after he saved a baby from a burning tower block has been jailed for nine months after crashing his bike in a high speed police chase.

Tommy Mackay was chased for 10 minutes by police cars and helicopters as he sped at 90mph on a borrowed silver Suzuki “super bike” on the A3.

The 23-year-old was finally caught when he broke his foot crashing into a blue Subaru at a New Malden roundabout in the chase on September 9.

Mackay later admitted dangerous driving, having no licence or insurance and failing to report an accident.

But Recorder Humfrey Malins delayed sentencing at Kingston Crown Court on February 27, after hearing about his heroism in saving Sharon O’Shea’s 10-month-old child from the blazing Madingley tower block in July 2010.

Mackay was showered in praise and received an award from the fire brigade after he climbed 15 flights of stairs through black smoke and kicked down a door to save the child.

However, his bravery was not enough to convince Judge Peter Moss at Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday, March 28, that the convicted drug dealer had turned over a new leaf.

Speaking as he passed the custodial sentence he asked Mackay how many times he would use the “hero card”.

He said: “I have seen the material and read the articles about your bravery for which you have very rightly been commended.

“But how many times are you going to play that card?”

Judge Moss handed Mackay five months in prison for his reckless driving, which he said must have terrified the driver he hit and put others at risk.

He was also in breach of a suspended sentence, given to him for knocking the turban off a taxi driver in November 2010, for which he was given an additional four months to run consecutively.

Ms O’Shea, whose baby was saved from her 15th-storey flat, told the Surrey Comet six months after the tower block blaze left dozens homeless: “Until the day I die, Tommy will always be my hero.”
