Hundreds of superheroes took part in a race on Sunday to raise money for children in Africa.

It is the first year the Heroes Run has been staged in south London, with Batman, Wonderwoman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all spotted racing around Clapham Common.

Around 500 heroes took part to raise money for charity Pass It On Africa.

The event generated about £5,000 for the Brighton-based charity, which helps build schools and gives educational support to children in Ghana and Kenya.

Members of pop band Basement Jaxx started the 10k adults run, followed by a 500 meter run for children which was won by Finley Taylor and Andrea Baron.

Andrew Edgecombe scooped a prize for the best costume and was praised for enduring the sweltering heat in his Hong Kong Phooey costume.

James McDonald, Pass It On Africa co-founder said: "It was the first year we have done it, we were really lucky with the weather.

"We had just under 500 people, which was good for a first year. Everyone enjoyed it, we want to put it on and have people come again next year and bring a friend."

Another Heroes Run is taking place in Brighton on May 20.
