An ambulance cadet who saved a friend from choking to death was awarded at Buckingham Palace for his dedication and bravery.

Tommy Knight, 16, from Morden, who is a cadet with St John Ambulance, received the Grand Prior Award from Princess Anne on Wednesday, March 28.

The Wimbledon College student said: "At my karate club, someone went to the toilet and collapsed having an asthma attack.

“I opened the patient’s airway and after five seconds his breathing came back. I have also effectively helped someone who was choking."

He has been at the charity for three years and has studied 24 subjects including first aid, communication and working in the community.

He said being a St John’s Ambulance member offered unique rewards.

"It means a lot to me, as saving someone’s life is the most rewarding feeling anyone can get, especially when you get a phone call from the patient thanking you," he said.

“The best thing is the opportunities which are available to you.

“I have been on first aid duty at the Virgin London Marathon five times, to Wimbledon and to rugby at Twickenham.

“I also took part in the Cadet of the Year competition, which was great."

About 84 young people were invited to the palace to represent St John Ambulance.

Each county selected just two Grand Prior Award winners for their outstanding contributions and commitment.
