This is the moment a BMW collides with another car at the resurgent Imperial Way cruise.

The collision took place on the evening of March 22, the same night the cruisers were out.

The weekly meet-up of car enthusiasts, which often involves racing down the street, was believed to have been shut down after police and council action.

But the Croydon Guardian has learnt meetings have restarted and grown in numbers again.

Cruises are held most Thursday nights, initially in Purley Way, before racing along Imperial Way.

The meeting has been the cause of disputes for years, with car enthusiasts claiming it is a social event while businesses and the police claim they are dangerous.

An internet site forum for Vauxhall Corsa enthusiasts revealed the meetings have been busy, with one user describing the meet on March 8 as “rammo”.

And another user questioned the police’s ability to stop the races, saying “its always pukka if the police dont come, although saying that they show, drive up and down the strip and then dissapear lol”.

A YouTube video also shows a moped driver being chased by police at one of the meets.

The area is subject to a dispersal order which was first granted in October 2010, with regular police patrols on Thursday nights.

Officers had reported numbers reducing but despite the dispersal order not expiring until September this year, numbers have increased again.

A council spokeswoman said: “We are fully aware and understand the real community concerns associated with this activity.

“We would like to reassure them that we are continuing to address this problem and we will be assisting the police in any way we can to put a stop to it once and for all.”

Sergeant Paul Harrison, from the Waddon Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "The Imperial Way 'cruise' is something that we are very much aware of and we carry out regular patrols at relevant times to try and prevent and deter motorists from congregating in the area and from causing a problem for other road users and businesses in the area, as well as for their own safety.

"We are working with the local authority to look at options available to us to help prevent this from recurring in the future.

"In the meantime we'll be continuing with our patrols and our message to those thinking of attending a cruise is to stay away."

The meet was recently highlighted in Sky’s Crews vs UK show, which showcased “the real world of modified cars”.

The programme description added “it includes the best meets and show from around the UK”.
