Tom Brake need not have applied them after finishing third in a sprint race at the new Olympic Stadium.

Although the eyes of the world were not on him, the MP for Carshalton and Wallington but in a sterling performance to clinch the bronze medal in the 100m sprint.

Mr Brake, Liberal Democrat spokesman on the Olympics, was raising money for charity Bliss, a special care baby charity dedicated to helping babies born prematurely.

It is the latest installment of Mr Brake's Gold Challenge which has seen him take on 10 sporting events as part of the Olympic and Paralympic charity challenge.

He said: "Bliss is a wonderful charity that provides care for premature babies and their families.

"It has been an absolute privilege to raise funds for them, and I will continue to do so in order to help provide the means for Bliss to continue the essential work they do for hundreds of family every year."
