Ken Livingstone has promised to extend the Croydon Tramlink to Crystal palace if elected Mayor of London.

Visiting East Croydon Station this morning, Mr Livingstone was accompanied by Labour’s Greater London Authority candidate for Croydon and Sutton Louisa Woodley, Croydon Labour leader Tony Newman, and Labour GLA member Val Shawcross, a former Croydon councillor, for the big announcement.

He said: “My platform is based on making Londoners better off, which is why I have announced a Fare Deal cut in fares which will leave the average London fare payer £1,000 better off over four years.

“But there are additional transport projects we can do because of the sheer size of the surpluses at TfL. The extension of the Croydon Tramlink is about building for our future.”

The proposed extension would run from Harrington Road on the Beckenham Junction Route through to Penge, Anerley Road and then link to either the Crystal Palace bus or rail stations, or both.

Mr Livingstone, who will go head to head with his rivals at the polls on May 3, was also joined by former secretary for transport Lord Andrew Adonis.

He said: “Ken has set out a bold policy which cuts back on fares after four years of inflation-busting hikes from the Tory mayor Boris Johnson.

“I’m delighted the Labour candidate is demonstrating once more his life-long commitment to cheaper fares and investment in the transport network.”
