A leading leukaemia charity is to host a recruitment drive at the Whitgift Centre in Croydon next week.

The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) will spend two days at the shopping centre encouraging individuals to register as potential bone marrow, blood and organ donors.

It is hoped the recruitment drive will help find potential bone marrow donors for sufferers they currently support, including four-year-old Nevaeh Green, who suffers from Acute Lymphoblastic leukaemia, and Sapphire Timson, 12, whose doctors are considering a bone marrow transplant to counter her Sickle Cell Anaemia illness.

Individuals wishing to become blood and/or organ donors will be asked to complete a short application form. Those who register to donate bone marrow will be required to provide a small saliva sample.

Potential blood donors will be sent an appointment date, time and venue.

Beverley De-Gale OBE, co-founder of the charity said: "We urge black, mixed race and Asian individuals to make a date to donate at Whitgift Shopping Centre.

"Our aim is to make "2012 the Year of Donation." This means its important people from the community become extremely more active in bone marrow, blood and organ donation.

"We appeal to Croydon residents and those living in the surrounding areas to bring their family members, friends and colleagues and come down where we will be located in the Allder's square, to join us where we hope to potentially save someone's life."

The charity will be at the Whitgift Centre on April 26 and 27 between 9am and 4pm.
