By Samantha Brown, Centre Court Shopping Centre Marketing Manager

I am writing to you following the recent publication of a reader’s concerns (‘It’s shoddy workmanship’, April 12) about the appearance of one of the entrances to Centre Court Shopping Centre.

Firstly, I would like to assure all of our customers that the refurbishment being carried out is by no means completed.

The work was simply halted during the Easter period, recognising that this is one of the busiest times for the centre, with the intention of causing less obstruction to shoppers.

This was clearly sign-posted throughout the Easter period, and we would like to thank our customers for their continued support and patience during this refurbishment work.

The work itself is being managed and paid for by Merton Council, as part of a rolling programme of refurbishment works throughout Wimbledon town centre.

It includes repaving the area in front of the shopping centre, modification of the flower beds to create more space for pedestrians, new granite steps for a more inviting landscape, and the relocation of the Larger than Life ladies statue, which had caused some obstruction to one of our busiest entrances.

The work is due to resume again soon, and is expected to be completed in May.

We are confident that the work being undertaken will dramatically improve the landscape and provide a much more pleasant and welcoming entrance to our shopping centre, and indeed, for people arriving in Wimbledon.

What’s more, we believe the new layout will also give residents more reason to feel proud of their town.

The paved area had begun to look tired and was struggling to cater adequately for the great amount of people who visit this area.

We are well aware that the Olympic spotlight will be falling on Wimbledon this summer and we are totally committed to helping create the best possible impression of our town.

We apologise again for any disruption there has been, but we hope, at the completion of the scheme, that everyone will agree the fantastic new look was worth the wait and slight inconvenience.
