An Olympic rower is set to kick off the annual Get Active Wandsworth Festival today.

British oarsmen Mathew Wells, from Putney, will be the event's ambassador and is passionate about encouraging the borough's families to enjoy sport together.

He said: "It only seemed like yesterday that we were awarded the 2012 Games, yet here we are. It's great to see years of hard work, planning and collaboration in local communities finally come to fruition.

"The Get Active Wandsworth Festival demonstrates this coming together, and I urge everyone to get out there and try something new."

The festival runs until September 30 and aims to get the whole borough moving regardless of age or ability and to leave a lasting legacy to the London 2012 Games.

Last year, 4,000 people enjoyed a range of free events and taster sessions.

The Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Jane Cooper, will officially launch the festival at the Wandsworth Schools Year 5 Mini Olympix event at Battersea Park Millennium Arena, at 10am.
