By Myrtle Agutter; Chairman, Merton Seniors Forum
As stated in your paper, Merton Seniors Forum are pleased that the council and their partners are addressing winter fuel poverty amongst the elderly with their winter fuel plan.
We are pleased to be a part of this ongoing work.
However, Merton Seniors is also working with Sutton Seniors, the Greater London Forum and Ofgem to work with energy companies to both simplify their billing and also have fewer and easier to understand tarriffs, both of which we feel would enable older people to be far more in control of their energy costs.
We are also urging this Government to restore and indeed increase the winter fuel allowance.
This could be funded by a windfall tax on energy companies who have been consistently making huge profits at the expense of their customers.
We would also urge all older people to take advantage of the free insulation schemes that are currently on offer.
Insulation does help to reduce costs a little.
