The first stage of auditions for cast members of a new Croydon-based reality show took place last week.

More than 5,000 people applied to be on Surrey Heights, after the Croydon Guardian broke the story that a new reality show was to be based in the borough.

About 350 individuals, groups and couples auditioned at Shoosh nightclub between May 3 and 6, in front of a mixed panel of judges.

On day two of the castings the show's creator, Aimee Butcher, said the panel had already spotted potential cast members.

The 22-year-old said: "We are looking for someone with a story, with personality, someone that stands in front of us and makes us go 'wow'.

"We found a lot of people were coming in and giving the same line - that they were bubbly or different - but we have spotted a handful of people who are potential cast members."

The show, which is being produced by Mentorn TV, has already been heavily discussed on social networking sites, with some residents voicing concerns about how Croydon will be portrayed.

But Miss Butcher, who is a broker and runs an events company, insisted the show will be nothing like reality series already on our screens such as The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea.

She said: "This show is going to be a reality show, but it's not going to be anything like Towie or Made in Chelsea. In those shows, everyone is of the same genre, everything they are doing, they are all the same sort of people.

"We are looking to be different from the rest. We are a lot more diverse and the point we want to prove is that people from all different levels know each other and can integrate."

By the end of the week, those who auditioned are expected to know whether they have been successful in getting through to the next round.

They will then be invited to a second casting, which will involve a more personal interview, before a final decision is made.

Miss Butcher said she had been overwhelmed by the response to the show so far.

She added: "Everywhere I go people are talking about it. Twitter and Facebook have gone crazy, mine and my team's phones haven't stopped for weeks."
