The sister of a disabled woman killed in a Tooting flat fire on Friday has told how she received a letter from her sibling two days after her death.

Linda Wyatt, 55, died in a blaze in her ground floor flat in Huron Road on Friday afternoon.

Miss Wyatt's sister, Georgina O'Leary, who lives in Sussex, said firefighters told her the blaze was caused by an electrical fault in a fridge freezer.

Tragically, two days after the incident, Mrs O'Leary said she received a letter which her sister had sent two days prior to her death.

She also found an answer phone message which had been left by her sister on the morning on her death.

Mrs O'Leary, who has two children, said: "It's been a massive shock for all of us. It was her birthday on Sunday so she would have been 56, which just makes the whole thing even more tragic.

"She didn't have any family so it's just me really. I last saw her about a month ago when she came to visit in Eastbourne.

"The last year we spent together was probably the best we've had. She got free travel because of her disability and used to come and see us all the time.

"She was also considering moving down here as there wasn't much for her in Tooting.

"It was unbelievably sad hearing her voice on the answer phone after she had died, I wasn't prepared for that.

"The police also told me that she was asleep when the fire broke out and she most likely died from smoke inhalation, so hopefully she didn't suffer - although we'll have to wait until the inquest to find out for sure.

"The saddest part is because she suffered really bad burns, we won't be able to have an open casket at the funeral."

Miss Wyatt had a bad fall several years ago which resulted in her having difficulty walking and left her needing disability allowance to get by.

The Fire Brigade confirmed that four engines and 20 firefighters attended the fire at 4.56pm and extinguished the blaze within an hour.
