Mystery surrounds a man regularly seen walking four goats in Croydon.

The man has been spotted taking the white goats to graze in church grounds on Church Street, and close to Reeves Corner tram stop.

The unusual sight has got the borough talking, with lots of people commenting about the sight on Twitter.

On May 7, Claire Murphy tweeted: "Just saw two men walking goats through Croydon. GOATS"

Two days earlier Russell Profitt said: "Why is there a man walking goats in the middle of Croydon?" and on May 2, Mr-Jones tweeted: "So I've just seen a man walking four goats in Croydon- there isn't a farm round here?"

there were also 3 living behind the new town pub in sutton a while ago... don't know if they're still there. a pub garden. not an appropriate place for goats.

Go onto YouTube and search for Croydon Goats. He was around last August.

He probably has them to keep the grass down in his garden. Probably a lot cheaper than buying petrol for the lawn mower.

I saw this guy on Monday of this week, he was with another man and thought he had five. Is it possible he could've come from the Gypsy Camp that's up on the Purley Way at the moment.

I've seen him around a lot as well, many people stop for a little chat. Seems like a very friendly man and it looks to me as though he & the goats are there to tend the area around the Minster church...since the goats have been there, there is less weed in that area...he is certainly not a gypsy, just a man having a walk with his goats :)

I've known several pubs to have goats in their garden.

The White Bear on Featherbed Lane used to have a goat in the beer garden. People would buy two pints, one for them and one for the goat. It was reguarly drunk.

yeah, see? uncool! i wouldn't put it past most people to get the goats drunk, let their kids pull on their ears, flick cigarette ends at them, etc, etc...

if it was a pub garden like one more out in the country with more room to roam and a place to escape drinker contact, sure, why not? but in sutton, no way!

erm...i just looked up the white bear and i guess that defeats my point :/

anyway! i wonder if this goat man picks up his goat poo? lol..if i recall correctly, they poo like rabbits. piles of pellets... how tedious! :p :) and there is 5 in the pic, not 4.

No mystery really. He / They have been seen about more due to the Wandle Park being closed for refurbishment. They live very near to me in Rectory Grove Croydon which is the general area of most of the sightings. The quest for fresh grass eh, no doubt coming to a grass verge or roundabout near you very shortly!

Mystery???? No! Why didn't the reporter/photographe
r go to talk to him - it's not a mystery and the goat man is happy to chat.
About time the Guardian staff upped their communication skills!

I was at a pub recently that had goats in the garden, they must have had a sheep inside too cos there was definitely a baa in the pub :-)

I could definitely do with a goat or two on my allotment. Where is he?
