A couple had thousands of pounds of jewellery from their wedding day taken, as a neighbourhood was rocked by a string of burglaries.

More than £6000 of jewellery was taken from Josh Sunker, 40, and his wife during a break in at their home in Abbotts Road, Cheam on Friday, April 27.

The items, that included bangles and rings, were taken from the couple's wardrobe after the thief or thieves gained access through the backdoor at some point between 8.10am and 5.30pm.

The burglary was one of four on the same day within walking distance of Abbotts Road.

Police believe the burglaries, in Cheam Common Road, Wrayfield Road, and Alexandra Avenue, could be linked.

The number of burglaries is a major spike on normal statistics, while similar methods were used at two of the break-ins.

A hole was made in the glass of the doors allowing access to the key which had been left in the lock, meaning the doors could then be unlocked.

Mr Sunker, a specialist nurse at St Thomas' Hospital, said: "I'm just appealing for anyone who took this jewellery or knows where it might be, that it is irreplaceable and of great sentimental importance to me and my wife."

Police are asking anyone with information on the break-in, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously near the property on the day, to contact Sutton Police station on 101 quoting ref no: 4004274/12.

In response to the break-ins, crime prevention officer Duncan Harris asked all residents to take a few simple steps to secure their homes including shutting and locking all doors and windows and removing the keys out of sight to a place of safety.
