A mother being questioned by police over the deaths of her two babies had only been living in the family home for two weeks, shocked neighbours have said.

The bodies of the 10-week-old baby boy and his one-year-old sister were discovered after her husband got back to the family home after work in Killarney Road, Wandsworth, last night after 7.30pm.

The woman, in her mid-30’s, is thought to have attempted to slash her own wrists in an alleged suicide bid, although the London Ambulance Service have confirmed she did not require hospital treatment.

She is currently being questioned by detectives in a South London police station.

Neighbours have spoken of their shock on hearing about the incident and said they did not know the family because they moved in only days ago.

Dozens of families live in the wealthy area, which has earned the nickname ‘Nappy Valley’, with homes in the road selling for more than a million pounds.

The family-home, which had been on the market for £1.2m and was sold by estate agents Savills, is on three floors and within easy walking distance of Wandsworth Common.

The Savills website describes the property as “an immaculate family house, with a large double reception room, five good sized bedrooms, three bathrooms and a pretty garden”.

One mother living a few doors down said: “My husband works with the guy that lives next door to them and they went for a run before seeing the police had arrived.

“We have never met them. They had this new baby, but I thought there was one child. I have got a baby the same age – it is absolutely horrific.”

Another mum living opposite said: “I have no idea who they are, but as a mother it makes me sad.”

A worker in Wiles General Store, in Allfarthing Lane close to the house said: “It is a very sad thing when young people die.

“It is shocking - it’s the first time something like that has happened here. It is a very good area, it does very well.”

Earlier today a media scrum invaded the street, with film cameras and reporters lining the street and a helicopter hovering overhead.

Forensic officers were at the scene this morning and detectives were seen carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Inquiries are underway after the death of two children in Wandsworth.

"Police were called to an address in Killarney Road SW18 at 7.25pm on Wednesday, May 9.

"The ambulance service also attended but a 10-week old boy and a one-year old girl were pronounced dead at the scene.

"A woman in her mid-30s was arrested in connection with the incident. She is currently in custody at a south London police station.

"Detectives from the Child Abuse Investigation Command are leading the investigation, and inquiries continue into the full circumstances of the incident.

"Officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident."

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at just before 7.30pm to the Killarney Road to reports of an incident.

"We sent three ambulances, a motorcycle responder and a duty officer.

"Two innocents were dead at the scene and no one was taken to hospital."

A post-mortem examination was due to take place to establish the cause of death.

According to a report, the two children did not have any visible injuries.
