Police are one step closer to catching a suspected poisoner who killed a dog with pizza laced in toxins.

Kingston police have put up posters in vet’s surgeries throughout south-west London after identifying the toxic pellets found near Coombe Hill Golf Club.

Reports revealed six-year-old golden retriever Poppy was poisoned with methomyl, which is a chemical found in Lanate, a hazardous pesticide banned in the EU.

It is suspected that three year old Max, who died as he was rushed to vets after falling ill near the golf club during a late night walk, had also eaten the poison, though this has not been confirmed.

Poppy’s owner Sally Davis, whose dog died after eating the pellets near the 15th hole of the exclusive golf club, said she hoped police caught whoever had been planting the poison.

She said: “We do not think it is the people who run the golf course.

“I expect they are trying to kill foxes but we just don’t know.

“The police are on it so let’s just hope they can track down whoever is doing this.”

Lyn Hogg from Coombe Hill Golf course said a police officer visited last week to let them know the results of the toxicology report.

She said: “We are as keen as anyone to find out what happened as we have been painted as the bad guys.

“I have a dog so I can only imagine how terrible it must have been. At least now police are one step closer to finding out what happened.”

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I know it has been suggested that whoever is doing this was trying to kill foxes but why put it on a public pathway where a dog is likely to come across it?”

Kingston police, in partnership with the Campaign against Accidental or Illegal Poisoning (CAIP), confirmed they were still investigating the deaths, along with those of a number of foxes.

Detective Inspector Simon Day said police were keeping an open mind as to why the chemical was found in a public place.

He said: “It may be that they have done so to target foxes not realising how harmful it can be to domestic animals.”
