Youngsters participated in a scootathon yesterday to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The 200 toddlers scooted half a mile around Battersea Park on May 10 for Thumb's Up For Scooting.

They have raised about £25,000 online so far, beating an initial target of £1,000.

The event was created by Lucy Costa Duarte, whose father Gordon Ferguson died of the disease.

She called the event thumbs-up because it was the only way Mr Ferguson could communicate when he was unwell.

Friend Fiona Emson co-hosted the scootathon. Her brother founded a motor neurone disease research centre after he was diagnosed with the condition early in life.

Micro Scooters UK supported the event by providing limited edition Union Jack scooters, and accessories as prizes on the day.

Donations will go towards supporting the charity, which funds research into the disease.
