Plans for a new rowing centre at Molesey Boat Club have received the green light.

Molesey Boat Club, based in Barge Walk, East Molesey, is about to start construction of a rowing club which will allow everybody to try their hand at the sport.

It was hoped the new facilities would attract coaches and athletes to the club and give the opportunity to take part in more rowing competitions in Surrey.

They will replace an old rowing tank lost in 2004 when the Walton’s leisure centre was redeveloped.

Bill Raspin, who has been working on the project, said: “We have had tremendous support from many local schools, colleges and rowing clubs who are keen to see the rowing tank replaced.

“People used to enjoy the old rowing centre very much.”

It will be developed in partnership with Elmbridge Council, which has agreed to give up a piece of land next to the club.

The total cost of the project will be about £500,000 and the club will receive support from Sport England.

Construction is set to begin in 2013.

It will be a single-storey building with an eight-seat rowing tank, gymnasium and boat storage.

The tank is good for experienced rowers and will also provide an ideal opportunity for those who want to learn to row in safe conditions.

The club runs rowing courses to encourage children and attract new members to join a team.
