Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond is backing a bid to bring the women’s Lacrosse World Cup to the UK.

The English Lacrosse Association launched its bid to host the sport’s 2017 World Cup last week and Charlotte Lawson, a member of the England team, wrote to Mr Hammond to ask for his support.

Mr Hammond met with members of the team to sign the club’s back the bid flag.

He said: “I was really pleased to show my support for this bid.

“England will do an excellent job hosting this tournament and I wish Charlotte and the English Lacrosse Association every success.”

The final decision will be made by the Federation of International Lacrosse in June.

If successful, lacrosse teams from 30 nations will travel to the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford for the event.
