An investigation is under way into a fire that destroyed a semi-constructed cricket pavilion in Caterham.

Firefighters were called to a cricket pitch by Birch Avenue at 11pm last night to deal with a blaze that had engulfed the timber structure.

The 16m by 8m timber frame was fully alight when firefighters from Purley, Reigate and Godstone arrived.

It is understood the pavilion, which had been in construction for the past eight weeks, was on land belonging to a school in the area.

It was completely destroyed in the blaze.

Purley watch manager Paul Barnett said: "It was a large fire. You could see the orange glow from a distance as we approached."

There was no electricity on site, and there is no obvious cause of the fire at this point.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service investigation team will be on scene today looking for what may have caused the blaze.

Surrey Police have also been informed.
