Nominations are open for an awards dedicated to Sutton's inspirational sporting talent.

The Sutton Guardian has teamed up with Sutton Council and Sutton Sports Council to launch the 2012 Celebrating Sports Awards.

With just two months to go until the London Olympics, the race is on to nominate your local sporting hero for summer sporting glory.

Categories include team of the year and sportsperson of the year, but it is not all about sporting success.

The council wants to hear about inspirational sportspeople who deserve to be recognised by their local community.

Councillor Graham Tope, executive member for community safety, leisure and libraries on Sutton Council, said: "We’ve always known that Sutton is full of people doing extraordinary things. We want to say a big well done and thank you to them, but we need your help.

"Do you know an inspirational sportsperson who deserves to be recognised? Perhaps they’re achieving remarkable things against the odds, or giving up their free time to coach others. Whatever their story, we want to hear it, so please get nominating."

Last year’s awards received dozens of nominations. Winners included Lauren Sullivan, a 14-year-old swimmer who trains at Cheam Leisure Centre, who was crowned Sutton’s disabled sportsperson of the year.

This year’s categories are: disabled sportsperson of the year, junior sportsperson of the year (under 18), club of the year, coach of the year, sports volunteer of the year, junior sports volunteer of the year (under 18), sporting primary school of the year, sporting secondary school of the year, senior team of the year, junior team of the year (under 18), sports teacher of the year (primary or secondary).

Nominations close on June 1. Visit sutton.gov.uk or telephone Sutton Sports Development Team 020 8770 4667 and ask for a nomination form.

The Awards will be presented to the winners at a special Reception at the Secombe Centre, Sutton on Thursday, July 12, attended by the Mayor of Sutton.
