Angry commuters were left stranded on a train in Balham for more than two hours after an electrical fault in Streatham caused severe delays.

Southern train passengers on the 8.47am service from Victoria to Epsom were eventually told to board another train at 11.30am following the incident.

Passenger Beverley Morrison, who was travelling to work in Sutton, said the train was forced to go back along the line before it finally continued on towards Epsom.

She said: “[The train] just went dead. Then they had to bring another train and a little bridge. It took them ages to do that. Then they took us back to Balham and dumped us on the platform.

“Customer service people with bottles of water and delay claim forms were waiting there.”

Southern trains between Sutton and Wimbledon, London Bridge and Blackfriars, Sutton and Victoria are still being delayed by up to 40 minutes, as well as First Capital Connect services between Sutton and Wimbledon, London Bridge and Blackfriars.

A spokeswoman for Southern Railway said: “Network Rail is hoping to restore normal service as quickly as possible.”
