By Miss R. Chung, Colliers Wood

I am in utter disbelief after reading your article regarding Merton Council's prospective idea of constructing a football stadium in the area in which Sainsbury's and M&S is currently located.

I had not heard of the plans, until I read your article, and I am simply disgusted by them.

The hypermarket was refurbished not long ago, which obviously must have costed someone a great amount of money.

To hear the Government has given the council £1 million to revamp Colliers Wood is wonderful news, but to spend taxpayers' money on a football stadium is simply outrageous; even more so given that it will be extremely small, only containing 20,000 seats.

Colliers Wood is congested enough already. With a football stadium, the roads will be gridlocked and we certainly could do without that.

Simply deciding to relocate the hypermarket is nonsense.

In very financially challenging times, with the recession continuing into a double-dip, the last thing this council needs to do is waste money.

Is it not cheaper to secure unused land, and construct on top of that, then to relocate the whole building?

Relocating would involve tearing it down and then building or moving everything into a different area.

I use the shopping centre extremely frequently and I am lucky that it happens to be within walking distance.

Relocating it would be annoying and inconsiderate to me, as well as those who live nearby and use it.

It means I would have to travel by car or some sort of public transport, not the bike as carrying a week's worth of shopping by bike is not safe, nor sensible.

Public transport or a car would involve burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide, something we are trying to reduce but that i shall not go into too much detail as that is another matter in itself.

I feel that the council need to think about people's jobs.

There have been enough job losses so far and we do not need another lot of people becoming unemployed.

This money that the council receives should go towards improving facilities such as the conditions of the Wandle River, the Merton bus garage, the local parks, as well as cleaning up the area and making it look nicer.

A football stadium would lead to more litter and objects being thrown on the floor, especially after matches.

Housing would be something to consider but it is not of importance, we already have houses in the area and Colliers wood is already reaching its optimum population.

The main focus should go towards sorting out the enormous tower which stands next to the Underground station.

We do not want, and certainly do not need, another engulfing building looming across Colliers Wood.

I strongly suggest, from a local resident's point of view, that the council and others involved should have a long discussion and rethink this prospect and spare a thought for the people it affects.
