Contracts are due to be exchanged on the former Cobham police station so a community-led school can open there by September 2012 as planned.

The sale of the Portsmouth Road building has been provisionally agreed by Surrey Police Authority (SPA).

Cobham Free School is set to open September and has already filled all reception places.

There is still space in years 1 and 2, which are being offered on a first to apply basis.

The school will provide 160 places within a few years, with class sizes of between 20 and 23.

It plans to open from 8am to 6pm to help with childcare.

SPA, which oversees the work of Surrey Police, has also accepted a bid for Esher police station.

The value of the bid has not been revealed because of commercial sensitivities.

Esher police station first went on the market in November 2011 and April 2012 was set as the deadline for offers.

A SPA spokesman said: “From the outset of the operational policing review, the authority and force have been clear that no station would be sold until an alternative provision for neighbourhood teams was in place.

“In Esher, agreement has been reached for the neighbourhood team and the front counter service to be co-located within Elmbridge Council offices and this is expected to go live in June 2012.”

Recommendations regarding Walton and East Molesey police stations will be presented at the SPA meeting in July.
