A second man is facing a lifetime behind bars after being found guilty of brutally gunning down a Streatham athlete on a council estate.

David Nyamupfukudza, 19, from New Cross, denied killing 17-year-old Herne Hill harriers runner Sylvester Akapalara in December 2010.

But following a re-trial at the Old Bailey, he was convicted of the schoolboy’s murder and a second count of attempted murder in relation to two of his friends, who were stabbed several times as they tried to escape.

The court heard Nyamupfukudza, who is due to be sentenced tomorrow (May 30), and his accomplice, fellow gang member Sodiq Adeojo, 20, from Peckham, were searching for rival gang members on the Pelican estate, Peckham on the afternoon of December 29, 2010.

Prosecutors said the pair, along with three others, came across Mr Akapalara’s group and began attacking them with guns and knives as they chased them through the estate.

After shooting Mr Akapalara, they left him bleeding to death on a fourth floor stairwell in Heron House, where he was found by police.

They then attempted to shoot the athlete’s two friends, but their gun jammed and the pair escaped.

In February, Adeojo was jailed for a minimum of 30 years in prison for the murder.

Three others were cleared, but the jury failed to reach a decision on Nyamupfukudza’s involvement.

Speaking after Nyamupfukudza’s conviction, Detective Inspector Matt Gosling from Trident Gang Crime Command, said: “I am pleased with today's verdict which will see Nyamupfukudza also jailed for a long time.

“Sylvester was brutally gunned down and murdered in the most callous way and it is only because the gun jammed that his two friends were not shot too.”
