Police have issued an e-fit image of a man wanted after a woman was stabbed twice during an attempted mugging.

The 39-year-old victim was walking home after getting off a train at East Croydon station at 12.30am on Sunday, May 29, after a night out in central London.

Walking along Morland Avenue, a man approached her and asked the time.

When she replied, he demanded money and pulled a knife.

The victim attempted to run away but the man grabbed hold of her handbag and after a short struggle stabbed her in both arms. She managed to hold onto the bag and the man fled empty handed.

The woman was taken to hospital and she has since been discharged.

Detective Sergeant Hayley Stanesby said: "This was a very violent attack on a woman trying to make her way home.

"The victim showed tenacity and bravery to keep hold of her valuables despite being stabbed several times ensuring the suspect left empty handed.

"This level of violence is unusual and we would ask anyone who knows or recognises the man involved to come forward."
