Surrey police are assuring race-goers and residents that plans are in place for a safe and enjoyable Derby weekend.

The Epsom Derby, which usually attracts 150,000 visitors, is expected to welcome even more spectators this year to mark the start of the Queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations.

A Surrey police spokesman said its officers will join colleagues from the other emergency services, partner agencies and Epsom Downs Racecourse staff to ensure that months of planning are put into action.

He said: "To manage traffic demands and minimise disruption to Epsom residents, many roads around the Downs will have temporary alterations.

"Waterloo Road will be closed around Epsom station as special plans are in place to deal with the amount of visitors arriving due to building works at the station.

"In order to plan your journey, please visit www.epsomdowns.co.uk/your-visit for more information and take note of the traffic signing on the day."

Chief superintendent Gavin Stephens said that although the event has been successfully policed for many years, this year’s Derby has added importance.

He said: "Our number one priority is to maintain public safety and security so that people can enjoy this fantastic event.

"While security measures have been put in place, I’d like to ask for the cooperation and vigilance of people attending to ensure everyone remains safe.

"While we work closely with the event organiser to minimise disruption to local people and ensure that travel to and from the event is as trouble free as possible, I’d also please ask for people to use public transport if they can and consider their journeys carefully.

"Those who must drive should exercise patience, allow plenty of time and park only in the clearly marked areas. Epsom town centre should also be avoided if you're driving."

He added: "Surrey Police has experience of dealing with major events and has well-rehearsed plans in place.

"I welcome this as an opportunity to put those plans into practice ahead of the 2012 Olympics, and safely mark the start of Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations."
