Star Wars villain Darth Vader has been snubbed twice by the makers of new reality show Surrey Heights.

The actor behind the mask, Dave Prowse, revealed he was keen to be involved in the Croydon-based reality show after reading about it in the Croydon Guardian.

Prowse, 76, arranged two meetings with the show's creator, Aimee Butcher, but the 22-year-old failed to appear on both occasions and has not been in touch since.

He said: "I was coming back from Dallas on one appointment and there was a mad panic once we got to London to get home to make sure I was back in time to make the appointment.

"I didn't even get a phone call to say 'sorry I can't make it'."

Surrey Heights is a new Croydon-based show, set to rival The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) and Made in Chelsea.

More than 5,000 people applied to be on the programme and about 350 individuals, couples and groups attended castings held at Shoosh nightclub earlier this month.

Prowse said: "When the article appeared saying they were looking for local personalities I thought 'I'm local and you could call me a personality'.

"There is a long history of interesting things I've done, irrespective of acting.

"I have no idea what the programme is about, it says it definitely won't go the same as Essex - I wouldn't want to get involved in anything like that - but if it is done properly and it reflects the characters and people within the Surrey area, I would love to be involved."

The veteran actor is best known for playing the physical form of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, but Prowse is also well known for his role as the Green Cross Code Man, a superhero invented to promote a road safety campaign in 1975.

His association with the campaign, which ran between 1971 and 1990, saw him made an MBE in 2000.

Prowse recently made a shortlist of 10 of the most famous faces to come out of Croydon.

The list features a variety of people with links to the borough who have made a contribution to society.

The three favourites voted for by the public will have their portrait painted on a new pedestrian and cycle route.

Miss Butcher was unavailable for comment.
