A Sutton youngster has become the king of London ping - pong.

Top shot Sutton table tennis player Liam Grant won the London Schools' Table Tennis Championship on Saturday.

The youngster, who attends Wilson's School, only turned 13 two weeks' ago, was crowned champion at Redbridge Sports Centre last week.

Sixty five players representing 38 schools from across London took part in the all day event for the climax of the competition which began earlier this year.

Young champion Liam said: "I have been playing table tennis for four years and think it's a great sport."

Father Neil, glowing with pride, said: "We are very proud of Liam. He has been part of the youth development squad at his local primary school. It's great fun and a sport for life."

The London Schools' Table Tennis competition is designed to get more young people interested in playing the sport at school for fun and also to compete.

The competition was hosted by the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) and supported by the Jack Petchey Foundation.

As part of the competition, over 200 free indoor and outdoor table tennis tables were given to schools in London as part of the Government funded Change4Life initiative.

Sophie Olyphant, children and young people project officer for ETTA, said "This project is aimed at increasing participation and awareness of table tennis in London schools.

"It means that for many it will be the first time in their lives they will get to play table tennis and for others it’s about being able to compete."
