A series of events are taking place this week to celebrate National Carers Week.

Young carers will be able to enjoy a picnic in Battersea Park on June 16, while a tea dance is taking place in the Civic Suite, West Hill, on June 21.

A storytelling workshop, taster sessions for exercise classes and a meditation class will also be running.

Carers are invited to get involved and find out what help is out there, with new carers encouraged to take part as well as those registered with the council.

A new website is being launched on June 21 by Wandsworth Mencap, which aims to attract more people with learning disabilities.

Service users who have been taking computer classes in the charity's base in Totterdown Street, Tooting, will be celebrating the launch on Thursday.

Wandsworth Council's carers' champion Councillor Claire Clay said carers can be wary about putting themselves forward for help.

She said: "I think the one thing they don't know is that there is support for them locally.

"If you can't cope the council will come and help you, they will give you a break. There is all sorts of support.

"They don't come forward. They worry if they do come forward they will be told they are not good enough - that will never happen."

She said it's important carers are not put together in the same category, with a variety of different carers in the borough like young carers, those who care for a spouse or their children.
